I have worked as Artist in Residence in Muckamore Abbey since 1996. In this time my residency has focused on the needs of the residents and their environment within day care services. It has been my aim to develop a creative 3-way partnership with residents and staff in order to secure the success of the work. Within this relationship we have been able to engage in a variety of artistic projects that have been situated within day care services.
Muckamore Abbey hospital Arts Care Committee hosts an annual exhibition, which showcases residents’ artwork. We have developed this further with Look and Book, a collection of residents’ artwork available to all Hospital departments, which can be borrowed and exhibited within all areas of the Hospital, throughout the Trust and in the Antrim Courthouse, who have offered us a permanent exhibition space. The Committee has brought music, dance, drama, ceramics and circus into the hospital offering residents and staff the opportunity to participate in a wide range of art forms.
I feel that engagement in the creative process can help raise self-esteem and develop self-confidence.
